Private Lessons

Teaching Philosophy: Improvisation should be taught like first language acquisition; the way babies learn to speak through interaction. I try to familiarize my students with the music by working on fundamentals, studying notable albums, learning common chord progressions, transcribing classic artists, and by having them improvise right away. Students learn by doing, then we work from there.

I believe in giving students the building blocks to create their own musical ideas that are in line with the musical tradition they are stepping into. Just like a language, there is culture, history, and vast works of art associated with the jazz idiom. Improvisation is not impossible, it is only unfamiliar.

I'm available to teach saxophone, flute, music theory, and composition.

Composing

I've always had a passion for story, and I try to embed a narrative into each piece of music I write. I have experience composing for feature length and short indie films, movie trailers, string quartets, original songs, jazz quartets/quintets, and larger jazz ensembles.

I would love to collaborate with you, and bring original music to your project. Prior to contacting me, please have prepared your time frame, type of music you're requesting, length of music, and any examples you'd like me to listen to.

Events

Performing is one of my favorite parts of music. I've performed at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, several Universities, local bars and venues in Philadelphia and Washington DC, weddings, private parties, and I've even done recording sessions for commissions and original works. I'm available to perform for all types of events (including those listed above).
